Foodie Fridays – Chou

Last week a group of kind work contacts invited me for lunch at Chou on Place de Londres. I wasn’t sure what to expect, as sometimes work lunch type places in Brussels can leave a little to be desired. However, my hopes were raised when I heard that it was a favorite of theirs to take clients and organize events. It turned out to be very good indeed, and worth the journey through the snow.

Situated on a little square between Rue du Trône and Chaussée de Wavre, Chou (not to be confused with Le Chou de Bruxelles) is a tiny space with no more than 10 tables in an intimate setting. According to the video on their website, the whole idea behind the restaurant is ‘transparency’ – the chairs are transparent, the kitchen is open and you can see through the floor into the wine cellar. This is off-set with rustic wood tables and dark panelled walls, making it cozy yet modern.

Restaurant Chou Brussels

Chou was opened by French chef Dominique Aubry in 2007 and offers a set 3-course menu for €45. This menu instant is described as the ‘chef’s inspiration’  and was my pick for lunch that day. There are other menu options with higher price tags and wine pairings as well.

The service started out with a little amuse-bouche, which in my opinion is a sign of good things to come. The first course was two huge scallops perfectly cooked with a mushroom puree – two of my favorite things on one plate. Happy so far.

Next came the main course of duck and a medley of vegetables and other interesting accompaniments (I can’t remember exactly what they were so please refer to the above picture. I think the orange puree was pumpkin or possibly carrot. In any case, yummy). And a flower petal and mousse make everything taste better, n’est-ce pas? I ate every bite.

Then the dessert. A trio of chocolate mousse, mini cheesecake and vanilla ice cream. All delicious and light enough not to feel stuffed from lunch. Coffee came with a generous selection of petits fours which I couldn’t resist tasting.

The wait-staff was extremely friendly and welcoming, and was just attentive enough during the meal. Now I know €45 is expensive for a mid-day meal, but if someone else is footing the bill (e.g. your employer) I would highly recommend it. Otherwise, go in the evening for a special dinner, as the food is truly of gourmet quality.

Thanks to the very generous colleagues/friends who introduced me to Chou. It was a lovely meal in a perfect setting on a cold day!

Wishing you a good weekend and happy eating!

Flagey 75

Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear Flagey, happy birthday to you! (I hope you sang along just now :) ) The former radio broadcasting building turned cultural center, Flagey, is marking its 75th anniversary this year, and to celebrate is having a party this week.

Flagey Brussels

Built in 1938 by Belgian architect Joseph Diongre, Flagey was originally the home of the National Institute for Radio Broadcasting and one of the first broadcasting buildings in Europe. It’s an impressive landmark nestled between Place Flagey and the Ixelles Ponds, and if you use your imagination, looks a little bit like a steamboat. The studios, especially Studio 4, have amazing acoustics and have hosted numerous concerts and recordings over the decades. Renovated in 2002, this art deco building now serves as a venue for all types of musical performances, film showings and other cultural events. I’ve been to a few classical and jazz concerts at Flagey over the years and always enjoyed the intimate setting of the studios.

Over the next four days, a special “Flagey 75” program will feature classical, jazz and big band music to celebrate this golden anniversary. Things kick off tonight with pianist Till Fellner exploring the 19th century with Robert Schumann and continue tomorrow with a performance by Musiques Nouvelles. On Friday, the Brussels Philharmonic will go back to Gatsby’s roaring twenties with ragtime and jazz from Shostakovich, Gershwin & Stravinksy. Then on Saturday evening the Matthew Herbert Big Band will get things swinging around 8pm, followed by an after party hosted by Radio Modern.

The anniversary year at Flagey continues with the Musiq3 Festival during the last weekend of June, the KlaraFestival in September and finally in December, a series of concerts around the “Voice”. The venue will also host some unique film screenings throughout the coming months, including an original documentary Phantom of Flagey featuring archival audio-visual material on 15 March.

Tickets for the concerts this week range between €20 and €35 (discounts for students) and can be bought online or at the door. If you happen to have a BNP Paribas Fortis card, you get a discount of 30% off all music productions at Flagey (except some of the festivals).

So here’s to you Flagey – happy birthday and many more!

2013 Resolutions

Well hello there! And happy (belated) New Year all. After a month off from blogging I’m slowly making my way out of my holiday coma (i.e. hiatus from all things digital) and getting back to life, including a new job I’m starting today (!). So to kick off this year on the right foot, I thought about making a few resolutions. Last year I made three on this blog, so let’s take a quick review of how I did before making any new ones.

  • Keep writing - Check! Whoo, glad I did at least one of these.
  • Explore more – Sort of. More to come on this in a minute.
  • Stop eating frites – Complete fail, but hey if you live in Brussels, is this really even an option?

For 2013 I’m going to take a slightly different approach. Instead of resolutions in the traditional sense, I’ve decided to make a list of new things to try in Brussels. Even after more than 10 years of living in this fine city, there are still a few things that I’ve never managed to do. So here we go.

#1 Get up early enough on a Saturday morning (or stay up late enough the night before) to go to the Mabru market in Laeken. I love all the different neighborhood markets in Brussels, but this is the ultimate one. Something like 40,000 square meters of space, with 150 vendors selling produce, flowers, meat, fish, cheese, etc. I have to admit that I’ve actually listed this as something to try a while back and never got around to it. 2013 will be the year.

#2 Track down the Keep on Toasting food truck and have a gourmet croquet monsieur. It’s completely shameful that I haven’t done this yet so will get on it right away. Hey, I don’t need to tell myself twice to eat something yummy! Ok that’s kind of an easy one. :)

#3 Go up to the top of the Porte de Hal tower for a different view of Brussels.

Porte de Halle

#4 Bid on something at Art Truc Troc. I’ve been to this very rather unique art show before but never had the courage to actually place a bid on an item. This year’s exhibition will be 1-3 February at BOZAR.

#5 Go for a run in Bois de la Cambre. Ok this may seem kind of lame. I’m not completely adverse to jogging, I’ve made laps around Cinquantenaire, Etangs d’Ixelles and Parc de Bruxelles, but have never made it for a loop around the Bois. More inspiration on running routes in Brussels see here, here and here.

#6 Take visiting friends on a bike tour of Brussels.

#7 Go to a jazz concert with the husband. I’ve had the chance to hear some really good jazz in Brussels, both at the Music Village and various concerts at Flagey, but sadly the husband has never been able to join. This sounds like a perfect date night for 2013. Some of my picks on where to go.

Ok that’s a bit of a long list, but hopefully I can pull it off and that it’s also given you a few ideas on some things to try.

What else would be on your to do list for Brussels in 2013? Share your suggestions!
